Tour of the Night Sky - September 20th

Unread post by AstroGeek »

Greetings, fellow ASSNE'ers

With the change of each season (equinox or solstice), I have been holding guided tours of the night sky for the public. These events take place at the Borden Colony fields in Raynham, Mass. The next one is scheduled for Monday, September 20th at 7pm. I usually get 30 to 50 attendees and I tell stories about the stars above while using a powerful flashlight as a pointer. This time, however, conditions are ideal for bringing in a telescope or two. The full Harvest Moon rises at 7:02pm and Jupiter and Saturn are well-placed. I do not currently have a 'travel telescope' and I'm hoping that someone might be interested in setting one up on-site. I plan on heavily promoting this event to my local communities as I feel that it is a 'special' night. If anyone would like to lug a scope and share some vistas with the public, I would greatly appreciate it. I have attached a link with more info below.

Thank you,
Steve L.

Mark,

This would be awesome of you. I visited the site earlier this eve and we will have clear views of Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter. The full moon will take a while to climb past the telephone wires, but it's not a major problem. Let me know if you need any more info.

Thank you again,
Steve

Hi Mark,

I am SO grateful to you for showing up tonight. I was NOT expecting over 100 people in attendance and you bailed me out with your telescope. Many folks have commented that they were thrilled with seeing Saturn and Jupiter through your telescope. I appreciate your effort. It was also nice chatting with you after the crowd had dissipated.

Thank you!!

Steve:
That was a lot of fun. I've never encountered a public viewing session where people were so respectful and grateful for the opportunity! They represented a perfect mix of grandparents through young children -- and the location was perfect.

I really like what you're doing with this ongoing outreach program.
