IC 348 Reflection Nebula and Open Cluster

Unread post by menardre »

Weather forecast was for a clear night last night. I decided to try and image the nebula IC 348 since it is in Perseus and would give me a full night of imaging. It was clear with sporadic winds. Moon was in 1st quarter but far enough away to not interfere.

I used 11 inch SCT and ZWO ASI2600 OSC camera. Started imaging around 6PM and shutdown around 2:25AM. Overall I took 217 images, 2minute subs, -10C, gain 100, and binned 1x1. I also took 50 flats 0.15 seconds. Had a little difficulty with autofocuser (had difficulty stabilizing during the night) but otherwise everything went well. I ended up with 189 really good images for stacking (since I took a lot of images I was particular about the ones used for integration).

IC 348 actually refers to the star cluster. It is a star forming region in Perseus and contains about 400 stars. It is a young cluster about 900 light years away.
