M13 KeyStone Cluster & PlateSolving

Unread post by menardre »

I was able to get out a few nights ago to do some imaging. I updated SGP with settings to perform platesolving and I wanted to try it out. Platesolving is really good for trying to frame targets, trying to image targets not easily seen, and most importantly imaging over several nights and combining those images. I always thought that Platesolving was difficult or tedious. It turned out to be relatively straight forward as long as you populate the correct parameters. So my first attempt at platsolving was to image M13. I picked M13 because it is really visually obvious (so I could readily verify the platesolving), and it is in a good part of the sky. Plus...I really love globular cluster, both visually and photographically.
I watched a couple of on-line videos (it is really great to watch someone else go through the process) and applied the correct settings to SGP.
When I fired up platesolving it ran though its process quickly and easily. It only took two passes to lock onto M13. Attached is the result. ZWO ASI 071 attached to SVX130 60 images of 2 minutes.
I have since tried Platesolving on a few other objects and I am impressed with how easily it functions. So anyone else hesitant about using platesolving, it is actually fairly straight forward.

You keep this up and I might just go out and buy a refractor....
