Ignoring the obvious, and increasing magnification several fold, it appears to be the primary Aire ring of a defocused star. Of course, that dark central area could be cloud. Or the instrument's just a tad out of collimation?

With a defocused star, the clouds couldn't be so sharp...

I think it is the view that you see when you surface on the Black Lagoon at night.

Actually, I suspect that it might have something to do with this:

Does it have anything in common with this? viewtopic.php?f=32&t=3337

Or is that NOT clouds? Is it smoke from fire?

Wow Bob, thanks for the memories! However, the only thing in common is that both
this post and the lunar eclipse post deal with the Moon.

Pete's engineer brain is so hopping with intelligence, it is leading him totally in the opposite
direction of the solution.

Mike, nice pics!!

I'll be back soon.

Well yes, that does indeed look like a skull to the left of the bright object - something Van Gogh does.

Wow, good eyes, Pete!!! Man, that skull is so obvious once you've pointed it out. And there appears to be a ghostly 'Greek comedy mask' above the moon image in the dark edge of the clouds. Dr. Rorschach, indeed

Okay, final guess (until the next hint :P ) - A cloudy moon, imaged as a reflection off a dark pool of water... :| Ignoring the obvious: looking down instead of up.

Or a cat riding atop the skull! O/k, now I'm scared. What does it say about me if I see these things? All these years of thinking that I'm just a little crazy, and yet I might be completely INSANE!

Remember I said this image is "actually creepy?"

You are all MORE than on the right track!!!! Only even more creepy is that
the image has taken on a life of its own!
The skull is great! The mask is superb along with the cat!

Although Rorschack's ghost may have taken this over, I'm wondering if what
I orignally saw, before seeing your suggestions, STILL EXSISTS!!!.

I'm afraid, clever readers, our innocent image has become a ouija board!.

I also thought what I see, would have been the most obvious!

Bob, Good guess on the reflected image. Sometimes water does act as sort of
a polarizing filter to bring out those cloud colors. Unfortunately, I would have lost most
of the clarity of moon and clouds. Thought for the future: I WILL try shooting the same
type of image with a polarizing filter.
What I DID do, after some intent study of the moving clouds in this shot, was wait for a thicker
moon-dimming segment of cloud to move across Luna. This allowed a lesser exposure of moonlight
and cloud to avoid lunar overexposure, revealing the colors.
You may recall my using this dimming technique in other images where the bright moon overwhelmed
other celestial objects close to it.

HINT! The boys of Liverpool called him, Mister Moonlight!
