Back in the saddle again
Saturday, 18 Nov 2023 The last time out before class ran was Sept 12th. In late Oct remounted cameras and discovered that the observatory main computer was dead. Finally, after about 13 years of service. Replaced computer and monitor. At Roger M’s suggestion I’ll be running everything off of a sing...

Re: NGC 1624 (Sharpless 212) Emission Nebula & Open Cluster
Hi Rog, Once again wonderful pinpoint stars at a relatively long focal length. I'm still out of commission for imaging but the replacement computer system's coming along. Would like to implement ASCOM communications but to expedite matters it looks like I'll be using the previous slower setup and at...

SpaceX Starlink array pass over
Did you catch the Starlink Satellite Array pass this evening? 22 satellites ranging in brightness from 0 magnitude to 2 mag marching from W to E from approximately 19:41 – 19:45 hrs. While a pair of satellites isn’t uncommon I’d never seen anything like this Spacing was anywhere from 3° to 20° separ...

Re: IC 1795 Fish Head Nebula
Wonder if it were possible to do a spectrographic analysis of that questionable area to determine whether it's biased toward Ha or Hb? If Hb the autocolor version would probably be more accurate.

Visual objects for October class?
This is the observing list from last week's 18:30 - 20:30 hrs class. And we were successful with all objects. There are 2 more classes to go and other than adding Jupiter I'm at a loss as to what else beginners with an untrained eye can visually appreciate. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ...

Re: M71 Globular Cluster
Rog, your longer than normal cluster exposure brings out about a million faint/tiny background stars. Never thought about long exposure for star clusters.

Re: NGC 7741 Barred Spiral Galaxy -updated
Such detail on such a relatively tiny DSO. If I tried that my stars would show at about 1/4" diameter.

Re: M73 Open Cluster or asterism??
Gosh, for a simple 4 star group you make it so very interesting Roger. This is one of the things that I emphasize in my Backyard Astronomy class. If you don't understand what you're looking at it's pretty meaningless.

NGC 7789 Caroline's Rose
Tuesday, 12 Sep 2023 Right in the middle of a bunch of storms tonight’s sky is transparent and still. More stuff coming in but this is the perfect opportunity to image a cluster that has captured my imagination – Caroline’s Rose. Setup unchanged so can use flats from Sep 1st work. 74° F. With the ai...
