Blue Supermoon of 31 Aug 2023
Blue Moon / Supermoon tonight at around 21:30 hrs. Hurricane Idalia is passing to the south and there’s enough cloud at the fringes to inhibit imaging. Up again at 01:00 and the sky’s relatively clear. So the captures were actually 4 hours past "full". Some wispy cloud but the stars are vi...

NGC 6888 - the Crescent Nebula
Friday, 1 Sep 2023 What a beautiful clear still night for observing. There’s a full moon rising but the first hour of work is very dark and the rest of the time the dome blocks the scope from direct moonlight. A multi-star focus routine results in a FWHM of just 3.8 and that’s as good as it gets for...

Re: M2 Globular Cluster reimaged
The larger the aperture the fainter the stars. Probably as significant as the exposure. I'm blown away with the pinpoint stars at the longer focal length.

Re: NGC 6946 - The Fireworks Galaxy
Played with it a bit more and am pretty happy with the result - better resolution and extended nebulosity.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.- Thu Aug 24, 2023 9:20 pm

NGC 6946 - The Fireworks Galaxy
Wednesday, 23 Aug 2023 It’s a mild 66° F and the sky’s Bortle 5 – clear and calm and transparent. The 1st quarter moon is to the SW so, tonight’s target is to the NE. This will be the first of a series where I’m using the 102mm refractor to capture objects that didn’t work out so well with the 14”. ...

Re: Sharpless 101 (Sh2-101) Emission Nebula
I was set up for imaging last night, and although the observatory was running no imaging was possible from this location. Don't know how you manage Roger.

Has anyone processed in Siril?

This one is popular with spectroscopy folks, and it seems to have some unique features - among them tools to analyze star brightness variation.
Unfortunately, it's much more complex than DSS and I'm hesitant to even give it a trial.

Most excellent. Yours may be the first images taken with this mount.

Re: M56 Globular Cluster
Actually, why did you shoot 2 minutes instead of 30 seconds?

Re: M56 Globular Cluster
5 hrs of 2 minute exposures? Surprised the individual frames didn't burn out. And whatever prompted you to do such a long capture of a globular? Normally globs are shot as quickies.
The results are spectacular to this astro student who envies your pinpoint sharp stars at such a long focal length.
