Re: For want of a can of spray paint....
Fascinating article. It was a fiasco, for sure. I had a bit of an inside look at this, since my uncle worked for Itek Corporation, one of the Route 128 defense contractors in Massachusetts. Itek made spy satellite cameras, honeycombed and polished the mirrors for Keck I, and devised the corrective m...

That is such a nice image, Steve, that it could be used for a finder chart. Nice clarity, and a wonderfully wide field!

A war bonnet makes as much sense as anything! There appears to be lots of structure to the object, which initially led me to think 'lens flare' being exaggerated by layers of coatings on the glass. Could this be an attempt to find the Pup by holding Sirius off the edge of the FOV?

Re: Supernova in M95?
I hadn't heard about it, and can't look for it tonight, Pete, but I'll sure try tomorrow if the weather holds. Thanks for the heads-up. THIS JUST IN: There's another SN in NGC 4790. That's in Virgo, not too far from M104. This particular SN is almost dead center in the galaxy, and is currently 0.3 m...

Re: Venus Transit coming up June 5, 2012
I'm reminded of a strange solar telescope owned by Greg S. that I used at one of the schools in Barrington a number of years back. It was a Newtonian with an un-coated primary mirror, a normal secondary, and a glass solar filter (white light) just before the eyepiece at the opening of the focuser. A...

Re: nanosat
There are parts of the country where the jet stream seldom intrudes, but we usually have to deal with it. If one of these weather balloons actually does reach 60,000 feet, it has to pass through the typical jets, which flow at about 40,000/50,000 feet and blow at least 60 mph, with >100 being fairly...
