Re: M51 stretch comparison - General Hyperbolic Stretch

It always amazes me the hidden data that an image file contains that may not necessarily be revealed in the processing workflow. It's almost as though one should never discard data, for the possibility that it contains previously unrealized features that may be revealed by future processing attempts...

Re: FREEBIES!

Hi Pete, What an awesome gesture to give all this stuff away to interested parties! Thank you! If nobody has claimed them yet, I'd offer to take the following off your hands; The 16x80 Orion Binos , The Luginbuhl and Skiff handbook, The Tirion and Crossen hardcover binocular book. If any of these it...

Re: Looking Ahead in 2023

Wow! Is the new dome operational (as in moves via motor power, etc)?

I fit squarely into the "other observers to set up scopes on the lawn" category and will be there as often as I can to support events at UMD.

Are You a Reader?

If so, maybe you'd be interested in participating in some book reading/discussion programs? The SSAS began a One Book One Club initiative last year where several members from that group and a few folks from ASSNE read Packing For Mars by Mary Roach. A discussion session was held last December at Ste...

Looking Ahead in 2023

Greeting Fellow Intrepid Astronomy Enthusiasts, Thinking about the year ahead, what are YOU looking forward to from an astronomical adventure perspective? As for me, I'm looking forward to finishing the Astronomical League's Binocular Deep Sky program which I started last fall and has been great fun...

Ah, a less sinister version than I was expecting. Perhaps if you ate a couple of oxen for lunch and maybe killed a few neighbors or something you could refine your scowl.

Re: A Fantastic Naked-Eye Sight Throughout December

Well, Mars sure did move as prescribed! Last night I looked up and sure enough there it sat right between the Haydes and the Pleiades. There was plenty of moonlight and the transparency wasn't perfect but it still looked good, so I took a picture. I used a Nikon DSLR with a 50mm prime lens mounted o...

Re: To drizzle or not to drizzle

Drizzling, in this case, killed it. It demolished the extended nebulosity apparent in the un-drizzled image, as well as dimmed the overall image and muddied up the background. Blech!

No more drizzle for you! :)

Re: Phantom Galaxy M74

Tim, it's been interesting watching your adventures with the Vespera. It's obviously pretty capable for a 50mm scope, but one of the more noticeable differences I've been picking up on is the made-for-cell-phones aspect ratio of the images. I'm curious if that's a changeable parameter with this new ...
