Re: M73 Open Cluster or asterism??
One thing Roger didn't mention about that asterism is the overall dimness of it. The brightest star at lower left is 10.35, the one above it is 11.25, the one to the right of it is 11.85, while the far right one is 11.7 mag. That makes me wonder if Messier saw anything at all in his small scope, and...

Re: M73 Open Cluster or asterism??
I remember looking at this thing when I was completing my observations for the AL Messier observing club and thinking that it was a mistake. In the 4.5" scope I was using under less than stellar sky conditions it was three stars and that's about it. There are a few objects across the list that ...

Very pretty shot, Steve. I can definitely see the size difference.

Steve, outstanding Ha detail and colorizing of the Sun! I love that hue! And the Moon...it's got its headlights on.

Re: New Supernova Discovered in M101 at 7Mpc and 14.9 mag.
Now if only that darned smoke would go away... As mentioned prior, there is a new supernova in the galaxy M101 in Ursa Major. It has indeed become an entirely viable object for amateurs using small telescopes. At its current magnitude of 11.9 (and likely to get brighter) it's on the limit for a 4&qu...

Re: Writeup about our UMass-D observing session
Yes, nice article, but someone may want to let them know that it's the Astronomical Society of SOUTHERN New England that is hosting the guests for dome outreaches.

Beautiful image of 2841, Roger. That galaxy was the Observer's Challenge object for March. Below is an accounting of my visual experience with it, which I rotated to match the orientation of your image;

A Different Kind of Galaxy Challenge
Greetings Fellow Observers, I present to you all today - meaning both our visual observers as well as our imagers - a significant challenge for your consideration during the April dark skies period. Spring is considered 'galaxy season' in the astronomy realm, and many of us are already reaping the r...

Space Adventure Exhibit
I just got back from attending the Space Adventure exhibit currently showing in Chelsea, MA. This was a very good take, and due to popular demand it has been extended into April. If you can, go mid-week like we just did. We virtually had the place to ourselves. On weekends it's overrun with kids. It...

Re: Image & Animation of Comet E3 ZTF
Steve, that animation is perfect and the final outcome reflects exactly the reality of our sky, which of course is gray vs. anything near black. Your GIF is very reminiscent of exactly what I saw while visually observing it at the same time you were imaging it.
