Well, well... I am humbled by all of your rave reviews of the Eagle Nebula image. Thank you. But I am even more piqued by your input as far as colors, filters, and the idea that this thing actually 'disappears' as you get physically closer to it. Ths discussion here has been really thought-provoking...

Tom, I agree. This depiction leans toward the red/magenta throughout the field. Part of this may be due to the fact that I used images in red light AND in H-alpha (red) light to get the most detail. It was not easy to process out the reddish hues from the dark star fields in the corners without losi...

The Eagle has landed....

...and I captured him with my DSI camera. We have had some beautifully clear nights this week, but a waxing gibbous moon has hung in the southern sky each night. Nevertheless, I set out to take an image on Wednesday night after work. I don't get home till about 10:30pm, but darkness does not fully a...

Paul, You are too much!! NOW we have a fair estimate of the number of galaxies detectable in this field of view. I can see one rather obvious one that I forgot to label in the far lower right corner. Looks like an edge-on spiral to me... Paul, if you have some free time, I'm curious to know how many...

I had a little bit of time and curiosity got the best of me, so I decided to highlight the galaxies. First I went looking for a REAL detailed picture of this galaxy cluster. I found one at: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0707/A2151LRGB_hallas_c800.jpg I zoomed in on the picture for a BIG view. Then...

Daytime/Cloudy Night Astronomy

I never expected the recent trend of ASSNE Image Studio participants to become so involved with looking DEEPER into images posted here. In particular, I am referring to so many of you who have doggedly pursued IC 1296 in my simple technicolor image of the Ring Nebula. I give credit to Dan Silva for ...

Heh, heh....I like how you guys are digging in your heels and are looking for fainter stuff hidden in the picture. That's good!! That's how odd discoveries are made!! Anyways, with just 20-second exposures, I wasn't really trying to capture that faint galaxy. My goal was a colorful Ring. But anyways...

M57: through the ages

If it's the Ring Nebula, then it must be summertime!! Last night, I was out till the wee hours taking an image of M57. As I was processing the data today, I realized that I have a long imaging history with this object. And oh my, how times have changed... It began (to the exact DAY!!) on June 3, 200...

Wow Bill, those are really cool!! You picked some nice, lesser known subjects and made them sparkle. Dan Silva just the other night was telling me how digital cameras tend to pick up more of the blues than the reds and I see that in your photos. And I never knew about that straight line of stars in ...
