Re: Aurora Borealis
I can't believe that one Owen. The eyewear we all used for the solar eclipse is a white light filter attenuating all frequencies 1000-fold or perhaps greater. If they render the sun viewable can't see as to how they'd work on a dim nighttime object.

The aurora that wasn't
Went out several times in the wee hours of the morning to check out the sky. Strangest thing I've ever encountered. The summer stars were clear overhead but the sky was milky white and no aurora was visible. Don't know how the stars were so visible when the sky was bright white. Anyone have any luck...

Batting .333
Out last night. Objectives were to help new member Dan Lynch collimate his scope, repair the club 8" SCT and capture the Coma Cluster. Dan Lynch s.jpg Dan lives in Fall River and was unaware of the existence of a local astro group. He joined up online within hours of me telling him about us. An...

Re: Revisiting M81/M82
I agree with the light intrusion situation. Much worse last night when I didn't turn the brilliant monitor off.

Revisiting M81/M82
24 Apr 2024 While I’d planned to work on the scope/camera setup tonight the sky unexpectedly cleared and it became an observing night. Disconnected the guide camera to scope guide port cable. Removed the LP filter from the refractor optical train, and ran appropriate flats. It’s 54°F and there’s a s...

Re: NGC 4490 Barred Spiral Galaxy and NGC 4485 Irregular Galaxy
Yup, I've just come up with the same conclusion Roger. The LP filter increases exposure time 3X, and on clear nights it might be more of a hindrance than a boon. Will be pulling it out of the optical train when working the Coma Cluster on Thursday.

Stumbling through the Beehive
There was a 3/31 update to PHD2, and when attempting to image last week the software wasn’t moving the mount. Camera worked and software ran but the mount didn’t move. “Mount does not support the required pulse guide interface.” There’s a full moon so tonight is the primary objective is fixing guidi...

Re: NGC 4490 Barred Spiral Galaxy and NGC 4485 Irregular Galaxy
Roger, I assume that you are not using any filter here?
