Re: NGC 4490 Barred Spiral Galaxy and NGC 4485 Irregular Galaxy

Yup, I've just come up with the same conclusion Roger. The LP filter increases exposure time 3X, and on clear nights it might be more of a hindrance than a boon. Will be pulling it out of the optical train when working the Coma Cluster on Thursday.

Stumbling through the Beehive

There was a 3/31 update to PHD2, and when attempting to image last week the software wasn’t moving the mount. Camera worked and software ran but the mount didn’t move. “Mount does not support the required pulse guide interface.” There’s a full moon so tonight is the primary objective is fixing guidi...

Roger, I assume that you are not using any filter here?

Re: Messier 88 Spiral Galaxy

Always impressed with the fine detail that you achieve Roger. I was out myself only to discover that the latest PHD2 version loaded on 31 Mar 2024 no longer communicates with my mount. I'd like to say that every night under the stars is relaxing but sometimes it's just frustrating.

Smart scopes

The $500 variety appear to be the very best way to capture astro images. We've two that I know of in the club and here's a writeup on the ZWO Seestar written by one of the folks over at Skyscrapers.

Re: Will there be clear skies anywhere?

I am so primed for this eclipse. Got solar glasses from last event and have made up Baader film lens caps for both binoculars.

The Vermont forecast seems to be better than anywhere else under the path. Traffic is expected to be heavy and slow up and back.

The Leo Triplet

31 March 2024 The dome shutter was inoperable all winter, but we caught a warm dry day mid-March and it was finally repaired with my sons doing the heavy lifting. Sunday night started out with a little haze, and while I’ve done better on the Triplet using the Hyperstar I can't complain as the sky tu...

Re: Will there be clear skies anywhere?

It's a crap shoot for sure. Will probably be driving up to the Canadian border and home the same day if the forecast is favorable..

Re: NGC 4228 Barred Dwarf Irregular Galaxy

That's pretty amazing Roger. Over here I had wind and a high haze to contend with as well as the moon. Didn't even try going out under those conditions. And your 4228 is only 8' X 6' in size requiring a lot of magnification. Doing 5 hours is a big help but given the conditions the sharpness of this ...

Both astronomy and radio in one day

The dome shutter has been jammed since mid-December and the disassembly/repair needs to be on a warm dry day. Like today. With the help of my two sons we got the job done. Stargazing is once again a go. Many astronomy folks are also into ham radio. Not sure why that is but I'm back into it after a 5...
