Hummm. I was only 20 feet from you, but look how much better the skies were over at Camp Tom. When I looked up at M31 from my spot it was a big nice galaxy hanging up there in the sky, but it was much fuzzier. Did you use binoculars or a telescope or something?

Nice, nice work!

Tom, this is the best I can do to show the 'Trifid Cat'. It would help if cats came in Ha red, but at least this one has a blue reflection nebula of some sort right next to it....ImageImage
An appropriately resized and otherwise plagiarized Trifid has been added to show you the resemblance. BTW, the cat image is 'borrowed' too.

Thanks, Bob S- We have to get your telescope into imaging mode. That produced some really nice views Saturday night! Stunning!

Bob M- There is absolutely no toppng your Trifid. I'll take Earth Trifids anytime. We definitely need to hear the history of that shot!!!

O.K. Tom, this is your fault for posting your beautiful shots! Not only that, but we just
adopted another cat (kitten)!
I know you've posted this information in the past, but now that I'm getting serious about
DSLR imaging, I'm paying attention.
My first two questions of many, many future questions:

1. Are you using an auto guider?
2. How are you focusing?

Thanks, B.
Bonus question. Are you shooting afocal or prime?

Bill- 1) Yes! I was using the Nexguide on an AT66 refractor ( and then reversed the setup for the M31 capture). I didn't have to use a laptop!

2) Eyeballing it. As I was using the Rebel XT- it does not have live view. I focus on a bright star then hope for the best.

I was shooting Prime, if you allow for the FR 6.3 as part of the imaging train.

Please ask away....Would be very pleased to add any details as you go along.

Thanks Tom! That Nexguide is working really well! I remember now, talking about it with you and Paul
at the cookout! Or was it the Commander? Or my new kitten? Sorry, it's 10:00 and I just got in from CT.

I'm pretty sure the T1i has live view. If so, I hope it works well in space. The Sony has live view.
Gee, I graduated from photog school in 72' but I feel like I'm starting all over again!
There will be MANY more questions! I promise.

Bill,

There is one suggestion I would make that will grea ly enhance your enjoyment of Astro-imaging with a DSLR, and that is to either have your new camera "modded", or buy a used one on AM that is already done. Sensitivity increases dramatically....The 450D is a great choice, as I believe it has live view, and you can always put a filter on it for daytime use.
