New Comet C/2007 B2 Skiff

Postby Mark G » Sat May 10, 2008 3:50 pm

Come on Paul your slackin' not annoucing the new comets. This ones not big or bright but a new comet just the same.

This comet begins the month in Virgo at magnitude 11.9. Look for a 1.5' coma. It should remain constant. Seems it will get fainter & fainter too!

LOL Mark,
I dont post comets any greater than 10.0 mag simply because of the fact that chances are we are not going to see it. After all the comets that Bob and I have chased I think and Bob can correct me if I am wrong that 9.9 was our dimmest comet to date. Anything beyond that magnitude we have not found.

Paul's right. I dragged my dob out at 4am on two occasions, looking for some dim comet or other, and once for two hours at midnight, I think trying to find 177P Barnard. Never happened.

11.9 mag and 1.5' coma? If I go to Little Compton, of course I'll try. But anywhere else? Not visually, for sure. Bill G??? :)

I've picked them up at 11.5 photographically with the Sony by shooting the known field. At about 10th mag. I can start seeing them in the EP (120mm refractor, 40mm EP). Maybe I'll go for this one.
The camera is a fun way to search for asteroids and comets that are below the mag. limits of the human eye. Give it a try!
