Viewing Mars...

Postby NGC7000 » Wed Feb 03, 2010 3:04 am

No pix, just a report that i was out the other night with a grab&go set up and looked at Mars with a variety of eyepieces through the Orion ED100 ( which is a great planetary scope with a 9FL ratio).

I could see the polar cap above the bright orange disc and just a tint of a pattern. I was mesmerized!

Get out there if you can. :P

Thanks for the push Tom. I'm checking it out on my next space expedition (Dang, just can't get that KID outta me!!).
I tried some imaging about a month or so ago and got only a pretty disc with no detail. Now that it's closer, I should have a little better luck. With emphasis on 'a little.'

Hey there, Bill!

I'm looking forward to see what you come up with. Mars is tough as a single shot item. I've been thinking of getting out there with the DSI 2 and seeing what i come up with. I was thinking that one of those Hyperion eyepieces that have adapters to attach to a P&S camera would be very helpful. BUt, yes, get out there. It's beautiful. I was using a 4mm eypiece delivering 225x, and it was spectacular.

I was observing Mars at 64X in my SCT the other night. The Polar cap was bulging at the top of he orange-yellow disk and Albedo was very evident. The sky then quickly clouded over...great apparition! Looking forward to further observations into spring!
