Telrad

Postby LGray23 » Sat Jan 16, 2010 6:45 pm

Hey everyone
After last meeting I have been looking for a Telrad sight for my dob, since everyone is telling me I have to get one. I have looked at a few online but can't find them for under 40 bucks not including shipping. I asked someone how much they go for and they said usually like 25-30 bucks. Anyone know anywhere I can find them pretty cheap or of any good deals? Or if anyone is selling theirs? lol.

Thanks!
Leah

I've always seen them sell for $39.95 + shipping and sometimes they show up on Astromart for around $30-$35 and for a couple of more dollars I would just rather buy a new one.
Right now Anacortes http://www.buytelescopes.com/Products/2386-Telrad-reflex-sight.aspx is having a special that if you spend $30 or more you get free shipping.

Gzz at the last meeting Leah was finding everything faster then my goto does :!: I don't think she needs a Telrad. Her 7x 50mm finder seems to do here well. But if you feel you need to buy one Leah, over accepting Bruces. Do yourself a favor and shop anywhere but with Anacortes. The owner is not a very nice person. And that is all i'll say on that topic. No slight meant to Manny by this either. How about Amazon? $36.95 & Free shipping there too. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000ALKAN/ref ... Code%3Dasn or my personal favorite Astronomics $39.95 includes batteries, & a base. http://www.astronomics.com/main/Telrad_ ... ct_id/3990

Thier you go Bruce. 8)

Hey Mark,

No free shipping on that item w/ Amazon. Amazon only does free shipping on orders $25+ if all items are FROM Amazon. This is Adorama selling thru Amazon, so there is a shipping charge of $6.75

Leah,

I concur, the Telrad is very handy even if you do have a 7X50 finder scope. I have found that, the Telrad really helps to find the target then center in the finder scope then in the main scope...I also have an Red Dot Finder (also know as an EZ Finder) which works well too. You can get one at scopestuff.com for $20.

I have the one from Orion, which is (was) around $20, and it works fine.

Quick finder, Telrad, or simply a finder scope - the choice is usually a preference and nothing more. But I wouldn't let you pry my Telrad from my cold, dead hands...

Leah was doing fine with her finder scope, but I think she would be quite surprised how easy it is to use a Telrad, and how much of the sky it opens up to you with so little effort. My preference for the Telrad has to do with the accuracy of the Telrad bullseye circles and how they let you get a good offset from marker stars, which is something that can't be done with a single-point aimer like the Rigel Quick Finder or the Red Dot finder on my binos. Good free Telrad charts are available for the more common target lists (Messier, Caldwell) and commercial books are available for many other types of targets.

Now Leah is a lot younger than I am, but I forgot how hard it is for somebody my age to use a straight-through finder scope on targets near zenith. My neck hurt for two days! With a Telrad, it is a heck of a lot easier. Telrads and dobs just go together. And if you have a Telrad AND a finder scope, there is nothing you can't find...

You want to buy an Orion Red dot finder cheap? After reading Bob's post, I'm going to get a Telrad.

Haha I think I do quite well with just my finder scope, but I definately want to get a telrad, or red dot finder. The only thing I don't like about the finder scope is the angle I have to turn my neck to look through it (even with how "young" I am, it's still a little uncomfortable), and my cheek touches the cold telecope lol. Thanks for all the suggestions, if Bruce could bare parting from one of his, I don't mind taking it off his hands lol. Of course Bruce, I don't mind throwing you some money for it, just let me know, if not I'll keep looking around. I'd like to try it out, I also need to invest in some more eye pieces too. *sigh* why didn't anyone warn me how expensive and completely ADDICTIVE this hobby is???!!! You guys are supposed to educate and inspire lol.

Plan on the very least a second mortgage. Yes, definitely addictive. Don't start smoking or doing drugs, you'll really be sunk.

Ha we are inspiring you to stimulate the economy

I sure don't need 2 red dot finders. It's not a "right angle" so you may get the same crick in your neck that the finder scope gives you but give it a try! Let me know if you will be able to make it to the Feb. meeting and I'll bring it with me.

Awesome, I already know I have the night off of work, so if my mom is willing to watch my son, which she usually doesn't have any problem doing since he's in bed by 8, then I'll be there. Oh and I actually just quit smoking (1 week today since my last cigarette) so maybe with all the money I'll be saving I can buy more telescope stuff!! Muah ha ha ha haaaa

A week that is so awesome :!: Good for you 8)

I'll put the RD finder in my computer bag so I won't forget to bring it.
I always wondered, like in the movie scripts how do you spell "Muah ha ha ha haaaa", now I know. I learn something every day!

Leah, Don't know why I feel so compelled to say this, but - that is so cool that you quit smoking! It's even better when you say it publicly, 'cause it's a step toward really meaning it. Don't worry if you pick one up. You can quit again the next time...BUT...you are riding the the crest of of a very big wave...Don't fall off your board! 8)

Yes, Leah, we "Educate and Inspire" but now that you've been an ASSNE member for awhile, you are part of that mission! Educate them about the addiction, but the cost is different for everyone, Good job on quitting, too! Tom is right and you'll get a lot of support around here on that...
