We have a new residence and I've been busy cleaning and packing and moving so I haven't had a chance to be there on a clear moonless night to check out the sky (WHAT? you moved without checking the skies first!!) until last night. At 10 PM I looked out and the sky was clear so it was time to check out the future of my observing from home. I sat in the truck for 15 minutes listening to the radio while I dark adapted. I stepped outside and went to the back yard to see what I could see. Orion was high in the sky, as was the Dipper. First impression- I expected large light domes to the south from businesses on rt 6 but not a lot there. A brightening right along my horizon but not climbing up into the sky. I knew I would have light to the north from Middleboro and a strip mall up on rt 18 that has several sodium lights. The dome petered out at about 35 degrees, if I want to observe something there I'll have to wait until later inthe year when the object is up high. I could see several faint stars in and around Orion's torso, and also around the "V" of Taurus. Not bad. I could also faintly see the milky way from Cassiopea down to Canis Major. Better than I expected, I'm happy. Mars really looks red tonight! Observing invites will be going out in a couple weeks.
Back to cleaning and moving!
