Hi All,

I got a call recently from the Preservation folks who run the activities at the Town Farm in Westport. They would like us to return with an outreach. We were very popular at our last appearance there.

So, they suggested late October, early November..

How does Friday Nov 6th with a rain date of Nov 7th sound?

The moon rises at 8:30 PM, and will give us another target if we are there until 10pm.

BTW, this is a GREAT observing site!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D

Tom,

I'll offer my help for Friday the 6th but not for the rain date.

Hi Tom,
Hard to say for sure this far in advance but I will probably be able to be there.

Can we nix the rain date as that will effectively negate us from planning a different event on that date?

HI Bruce,

Yes! After receiving some counsel from a gentleman and a scholar ( not two people, just one), who kindly pointed out that our outreachers are overburdened as it is with commitments, and so we should cancel the idea of a rain date. I'm all for it. So, let's just say

Friday, November 6th, and setup around 6 to 630. :D

ANd thanks to you and Mark for volunteering so soon. I'll tell you, anyone who was at the last one will highly recommend this site.

Tom,

I can help out Friday but the rain date Saturday is a no go for me.

Yes, it is a great site, HOWEVER, if you have a low clearance vehicle be careful. George know this point very well, right George :-) Crash, bang, scrap and sparks, oh boy :-)

Yes it is, Mark. Glad you brought it up. :D

Just to remind folks....this is an especially nice site. It is on a farm that overlooks the Westport River. Pretty dark sky and very nice people, too.

I thought it was Thor in charge of weather? Carful which pantheon you pray to for your weather, Tom, you might tick another off another. I guess one can be theocritically correct in these things... see you at the Poor Farm!

But you speak Greek to pray to Zeus? S'OK, Thor speak English, after all, for years, he was also Dr. Don Blake...is he still? Well, since it's Thursday--Thor's Day--it might be good to put in a request the night before...It's worth a shot, the way the year has been...

Endaxi... Then milo Elenniki kala, alla, ego boro moulo " doste mou mia salada horiatiki kai mia biera megalo, parakalo"... which means...Ok... I don't speak Greek well, but I can say" Give me a Greek Salad ( a small garden salad) and a large bottle of beer." I never prayed to Zeus for the salad, however. :D
Kai, pios eine Dr Don Blake?

English is a Germanic language, and so there's no need to get fancy, just tell Thor to give us good weather. Given, uns, god, and witar are fine old Germanic words, he'll understand. Those Greek 'gods' are just myths, unlike the Nordic/Teutonic ones... BTW, I have Thor's hammer out in the garage, so I'll bring it along... But that's another story.

And, yes, I'll be there. :P

My "squeeze" is going to be visiting on the 6th, so I'm afraid that I have a different star to chase.

No Poor Farm.

Sorry.

It is all Greek to me, Tom, but if I may infer your question About Dr. Don Blake:

Thor is a fictional superhero who appears in publications published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in Journey into Mystery #83 (Aug. 1962) and was created by editor-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby.

Image
Debuting in the Silver Age of comic books, the character is based on the Thor of Norse mythology. Thor has starred in several three ongoing series; several limited series and has been a perennial member of the superhero team the Avengers, appearing in each of the three titles.

Thor's father Odin decides his son needs to be taught humility and consequently places Thor (without memories of godhood) into the body and memories of an existing, partially disabled human medical student, Donald Blake. After becoming a doctor and thoroughly believing himself to be the young surgeon Blake, he later discovers Thor's disguised hammer and learns to change back and forth into the Thunder God. The real Blake's persona remains elsewhere until many years later, after Odin becomes satisfied of Thor's humility and lifts the spell, thereby removing the need for a mortal alter ego.

Protector of Midgard

Thor battles Hercules on the cover of Thor #126 (March 1966), the first self-titled issue. Cover art by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta.Being the son of the Elder Goddess Gaea, Thor has a natural affinity for Earth and feels obliged to protect the mortals that occupy it. Thor's time on Earth is marked by battles against supervillains, monsters, cosmic beings, and even other gods.

Thor's principal foe is his adopted brother Loki, who has hated Thor since childhood. Although a master of magic, Loki usually avoids direct confrontations for fear of angering Odin. On one noteworthy occasion, Loki's tactics are accidentally beneficial - although successful in using the Hulk to draw Thor into battle, it results in the formation of the superhero team the Avengers, of which Thor is a founding and longstanding member.

A later timeline has Loki causing Thor to be separated for too long a time from his hammer, causing Thor to be thrust from Earth into another dimension or limbo, referred to as the "void."

Thor's hammer Mjolnir is found on Earth and put under U.S. Army protection. Sometime later, the supervillain Doctor Doom is escaping from Hell as Mjolnir falls through that dimensional plane, and tries unsuccessfully to claim the hammer, which eventually comes into the possession of a man carrying a bag with the initials "D.B".

Donald Blake, upon touching the hammer Mjolnir, is transported to the void of non-existence in which Thor now resides. Blake explains that when Odin originally removed the Blake persona from Thor, Blake was consigned to the void that Thor now inhabits. When Thor entered that void, Blake was suddenly restored to being, in New York City. Blake convinces Thor to wield Mjolnir once more, return to Earth, and renew the dual identity with Blake. --Thanks to Wikipedia

Really? Mjolnir in your garage? I would love to hear that story Bob!

The viewing session is supposed to begin at 7 PM. Linton has asked that we show up at 6 to set up.

Does anyone need directions?
