Seldom-imaged galaxy pair NGC 2336 / IC 467

Unread post by AndyG »

In case you hadn't noticed by now, I love imaging galaxies.

This pair is located up at declination 80 degrees, close to the North celestial pole in the constellation Camelopardalis, the Giraffe. NGC 2336 is at the lower left and is about 5 arc-minutes by 2.8 arc minutes in size. IC 467 at the upper right is about 2 x 1 arc-minutes in size. Sprinkled across the background are hundreds of tiny distant galaxies, including a least two galaxy clusters.

The image data was captured in December and January from the remote observatory. Seeing conditions were unusually poor during that time, not the best time to be imaging itty-bitty objects like these, but I was able to get some long exposure time to pick up the deep objects in the background.

Andy

Impressive picture. I really am impressed with the details, clarity, and color in the spirals.

I cannot comprehend taking 27 hours worth of exposures. That really blows me away.

Great image, Andy! The spiral arms in 2336 are just the coolest thing!

Andy,

Yes, some of us did notice your penchnant for these often spirally little objects.

Nice work with that 12.5" on these tiny little guys!

Perfection as always Andy. Wow, I just checked IC 467 and it's only magnitude 12.7, a couple arc minutes across and you nailed it. Thanks for posting. ---- Chuck
