I'm just in awe of how sophisticated the demo video is and how you've advanced to state of the art technology worthy of a NASA site.

Double wow!

Wow! Somehow I missed this one. Just stunning, Andy. Sky artist is what you are.

Just watched the observatory video and I was glued to it right to the end. That is just fantastic.

Great music, too. Is that a license free piece? It fit right in.

Keep 'em comin'!

Andy better late than never, I just saw this image of the triffed. As usual as close to perfection that' you can achieve. I appreciated seeing the the workings of the remote operation. Just out of curiosity, how many programs are intergrated to do all that?? and the programs did you write them or is it in a software package you can buy. It is really nice, also again thanks for sharing it with us I think it is appreciated by all of us.

It is just a generic YouTube-provided piece.

All the software for controlling the observatory is either available for free or developed by me -- I spent $0 on the imaging/automation software (though I did spend a lot of time writing much of it)!

  • weather data collector - reads various weather sensors and uploads the data to a web site and displays it in a consolidated web page
  • roof control - an Arduino roof controller, plus the software to operate the roof and close it automatically in the AM and in unsafe weather conditions, and send SMS and email alerts
  • session planner - imaging target scheduler
  • Imaging automation app - runs all the gear from startup to shutdown
  • PHD2 guiding - guiding software, an open-source project (I am the project maintainer.)
  • subframe grader - for viewing and analyzing subframes for identifying and discarding bad subs
  • scope thermal control software - free, provided by Gerald Miller, a guy who owns a similar scope
  • planetarium app - Cartes du Ciel (Skychart), written by Patrick Chevalley
  • plate solving engines - PlateSolve2, free, from PlaneWave, and astrometry.net, free and open source, by Dustin Lang et. al.
