Galaxy trio in Virgo
Galaxy trio in Virgo
Slowly working my way through my backlog of un-processed image data, here is a the group of three edge-on galaxies in Virgo, NGC 4216 (center), NGC 4206 (top-right) and NGC 4222 (bottom-left). I just barely managed to pick up some of the faint tidal streams around 4216 discovered in 2010. The streams are believed to be a result of ongoing tidal disruption of satellite galaxies, visible as long tails extending from the progenitor satellite galaxies.
Inverted and highly stretched luminance image showing tidal streams and pillar-like structures.

Ok Andy, we get it. Your a master. I only have one thing to say... GET PUBLISHED, you put some of the well known astro-photographers to shame.

Re: Galaxy trio in Virgo
Wow, Andy! It's cool that you're capturing something that was so recently discovered. Now, we're talking about the stuff that makes 4216 look like a crown with a tail that leads down to a very dim galaxy at the bottom, yes? That's some dim stuff.

This is WICKED cool!! I love it when deep, long-exposure, images bring out objects or details that were unseen before. Switching to the negative certainly makes these wisps easier to see. Glad to see that everything is up and running and working out well for you, Andy. Can't wait for the next one...
