Messier 100 - Spiral Galaxy in Coma Berenices

Unread post by AndyG »

Imaged remotely from the New Mexico observatory over three nights last week :P The data was quite good and I spent very little time on processing. Taking a cue from Ron and Bill I restrained myself and kept the color saturation low.

Nice close up shot and wonderful detail right to the core on a very small object. Way to go Andy!

Holy Moly! Seeing all those galaxies in the frame reminds me of going by South of the Border when driving to Florida...all of a sudden there's just bunches of stuff! Awesome!

Does anyone know of a good plate-solve program this can be dropped into? I'd love to know how many galaxies are in that image.

I'm using some new custom software for better automated, unattended operation of the obs. I'm not sure if you noticed but before we left the restaurant at NEAF I was poking around on my phone... I was actually starting up the observatory 8)

Here's a crop of part of the image with galaxies down to mag 22 annotated. Essentially all the "specks" in the background are galaxies. The annotated image was generated using the Annotate Image script in PixInsight with the filters set to include SDSS galaxies with rmag < 22.0.

Andy,

just amazing! You are quite the master at deep-sky astrophotography. You should
get these published with Astronomy and S & T magazines, etc....

Thanks for doing that, Andy. It's just simply amazing what the amateur can do these days.
