M31 H-alpha emission nebulae

Unread post by AndyG »

Click on this thumbnail to see the full image, then make sure to hover the mouse over the full size image to explore the H-alpha emission nebulae in M31! The image is a two-panel mosaic taken using a narrowband Hydrogen-alpha filter, revealing hundreds of emission nebulae.

Very cool Andy! The mouse-over blew my mind for a minute there with the transition between panels, but I'm o/k now.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys.

Paul, those M31 charts are really cool. I tried matching up some of the charts with the full-res image, but interestingly most of the Ha features from the image are not present in the charts. And vice-versa, many of the features in the charts are not visible in the Ha image. I did notice that the text references a couple other sources identifying H II regions-- Baade and Arp 1964 and Courtes et al. 1978 -- but I wasn't able to locate either of those sources online. I bet I could find them if I looked a little harder. Anyway, it's interesting to see how things appear differently in narrowband H-alpha compared to ordinary broadband CCD or photographic images even though the Ha light is present in the visible light range of the broadband images.
