M27 / NGC 6853 Dumbbell Nebula

Unread post by rjbokleman »

Messier 27 (M27), also known as the Dumbbell Nebula, Diabolo Nebula or Apple Core Nebula, is a famous planetary nebula located in the constellation Vulpecula, the Little Fox.

Wanted to image M27 again tonight, but the weather isn't going to cooperate. Can't complain given the number of nights I've been able to get out there over the last week or so. Have kept everything setup and may get a chance to add to this on Wednesday, but figured it was good enough for a first try to post.

10 minutes? You've gone off the deep end, man!!! You can't do 10 MINUTE exposures! You're a ROOKIE! What's next, 15 minutes??? Wait'll Celestron hears about this. The price of the A-VX is sure to skyrocket when they find out that it actually cancels the learning curve. You may want to demand royalties.

But seriously, that another really great result. I think you've got a future in this. 8)

I'm glad you enjoyed it. You made me laugh, Mike.

Andy and I exchanged some email while I was shooting this in fact. This was the second attempt as the first night I suffered a "Pier Crash" when I got SGP to do an automated meridian flip. (Also a first.) The camera and focus tube extend pretty far on the SW100ED when not using the focal reducer...and while I was excited for 60 seconds when the flip occured it ended my first night abruptly.

Lesson learned. The second night, the flip worked this time clearing the mount. :P

Last night was too humid...hoping for less humidity and better seeing tonight to add to the data to pick up some more nebulosity...

Was able to add a bit more data and uploaded a revision:

Sadly the clouds rolled in last night just after my imaging run got started and only got 3 more 10 minute frames. Too bad I was too tired the night before and the humidity so high as I could have grabbed another 2-3 hours. Oh well. Good practice.

Now we're into a rainy spell, so time to rest up for the next target! Maybe M57 (before its gone) or ... for Mike's enjoyment perhaps NGC 457, ET/Owl Cluster.
