Nikon D810 Astronomy Camera

Unread post by Ronald Z »

Hey guys and gals,

Nikon just came out with their 1st DSLR camera optimized for Astronomy - the D810A.
I guess they realized it was time to jump into the game and compete with Canon after
Canon's second entry - the 60Da. This Nikon version is full-frame and higher megapixels
as opposed to the 60Da which is APS-C and 18MP. Interesting. Look at the price difference.

Canon has always had the lead when it came to astrophotography -- wonder how many
astroimagers will try out this Nikon. Here's the link:

I agree Bruce. What's interesting is that by coming out with their 1st astro camera as a full-frame, they are
eliminating a good portion of the consumer / prosumer market. Maybe they feel there would be enough people
interested in astro imaging who also have the bucks to afford a full-frame??? How many people can shell out
$3,800? Seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot. I would think that since astro imaging is such
a 'specialty' and most people would just want to play around with getting some good night shots. My Canon 60Da
was around $1400.

Yes, I certainly don't understand Nikon's marketing strategy on this one. For that kind of money you can buy a really good dedicated CCD setup. About the only buyers of this one will most likely be Nikon fanatics who want to say they have it.

Being what it is, I am sure someone at NEAF will have one to look at if Nikon themselves are not there.
