finally got a Jupiter image.

Unread post by Thuban »

So I have been playing around with the Ioptron universal cell phone camera mount. I have done alright with it but terrible with Jupiter. Then last meeting someone said something that kinda clicked in my head they said "Wow that is so bright it's almost too bright" Then I realized wait I bet there is just too much glare to use with my camera. So I attached a polarizing filter tonight and turned down the brightness. sure enough that did the trick. Only thing is the only eyepiece that Ioptron has that screws into the mount is a 12mm PL so magnification was a bit of an issue. I did some digital zoom to show a bit more detail but it didn't come out great. I really hope Ioptron releases some different eyepieces.

Hey, that's pretty cool. Not bad at all for a cell phone camera!

I have to admit I have tried holding my cell phone up to the EP and failed miserably to get anything other than a blur.

That's a great image no matter what camera was used! It's all about not being afraid to experiment with whatever you have
in the closet! This is the payoff! Welcome aboard!!
P.S. Hope you didn't mind me upping the brightness/contrast below. I couldn't resist the
details you caught!

Dude, you used a cell phone to take a picture of a planet almost 500 million miles away, and you clearly got the equatorial belts. That came out GREAT! 8)

Ha thanks everyone! Next item will be a Barlow so I don't have to rely on digital zoom as much.

Indeed! Did you get that with the XT8 on the ST80? I was looking at that iOptron mount, but was also waiting to see if Celestron came out with one for the iPhone 6...

I got this on the XT8. I think it would be nearly impossible to get this magnification on the ST80.
