Jupiter's Triple Moon Event
Jupiter's Triple Moon Event
I don't know if people were as disappointed as I was that it was cloudy the other night for Jupiter's triple moon event. I was able to take a whole bunch of images through slooh and make it into a rendering using the PitVi video editor. So here it is for those who missed it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5Blukp ... e=youtu.be

Wow I didn't realize 2 of the shadows were going to overlap, thanks for posting!

Amazing sequence, well done!
Where exactly was that SLOOH scope located? Do you have the details on the type of scope, camera, etc.?

Re: Jupiter's Triple Moon Event
Nice post, somebody please tell me something, I know I saw the two overlap, Were they both traveling in the same direction or going in oposite directions?? Thank you for posting.

Re: Jupiter's Triple Moon Event
Hi mrgizmo both moons were orbiting the same direction but because of the difference in distances one overtook the other. I agree it's really cool. I couldn't tell that happened until I made the sequence and saw it myself.
Andy here are the specs on the slooh scope I used. This was done in Dome 2 which is a nice instrument. I really like dome 1 which has a .5 meter corrected dell-kirkham.
This scope is located on mount Teide in the canery islands
Dome 2
Primary Instrument: 0.35 meter f/11 Schmidt-Cassegrain
Field of View: 13.1 × 8.8 arc-minutes
Camera Resolution: 2,184 × 1,472 pixels (binned 1×1)
Filter Set: Luminance, Red, Green, Blue, Hα
Widefield Instrument: 85mm f/5.6 Apochromatic Refractor
Field of View: 1.4 × 1.1 degrees
Camera Resolution: 1,600 × 1,200 pixels (binned 1×1)
Filter Set: Luminance, Red, Green, Blue, Hα

Re: Jupiter's Triple Moon Event
Hi Thuban, now I get it , it is like the spoke on a wheel the further out the moon is the faster it orbits. Does that sound good?? Mike the snow blower you showed last year(the one with the v8 in it,) I bet you could make some serious money with it right now. every body be safe

Actually the inner moons move faster -- Kepler's Third Law.mrgizmo65 wrote:it is like the spoke on a wheel the further out the moon is the faster it orbits. Does that sound good??

Re: Jupiter's Triple Moon Event
Andy is dead on with keplers 3rd law. The inner moons will have a faster orbital period then the outer moons. but you are correct that the outer moons will have a higher orbital velocity. Another interesting thing to think about with the outer planets and all the different moons and rings is the gravitation interactions. You have all kinds of interactions and resonances just like a mini solar system.
