Heads or Tails?

Unread post by AstroGeek »

Processing the image of a comet can be tricky. It's something I don't have much experience with. The head is bright and the tail is faint. I need to find out how it's done. Here is a happy medium depiction of Comet Lovejoy.

That's a great image of Lovejoy, Steve!

Thanks Mike. I believe that there is a tiny galaxy, about a comet head's width back, within the tail. Photo was taken around 7pm on January 13. Maybe someday I'll find the time to identify the galaxy.

The tail is so long (20 full moon widths at last count) you can't help but cut it off!
It's about time we got a break and finally got a stunning snowball.

Very nicely done, Steve.

I'm trying to learn how to process comet data too.

That looks good, Bill.
I was wondering if those rays might be lens flare artifacts but I now think, after your application, they definately
aren't. Nice work! Same to you, Steve!

This snowball is really getting our brain cells working!

Steve, your galaxy is PGC 1399248 mag 17.1. It is considered an unconfirmed galaxy, but in your comet photo it sure looks like a galaxy to me.

Here's another take on Steve's great image.
Steve, your pic has SO much info in it!!!
I take back everything I said about over-exposure.
You were expertly collecting tail detail!
Keep shooting!
