Low Horision Pairings

Unread post by DonB »

The parking lot of the local municipal golf coarse in Taunton at 3:45 this morning made for a low horizon. The pairing of Venus and the thin crescent moon made for some fun images. Below are two shot with a Cannon DSLR and a 300mm telephoto lens. The camera was mounted on Orion's small tracker, although at only 2 seconds exposure was probably not needed. Processing was in Photoshop.

I like trying to image these groupings. And this was just practice for July 5 & 7 when the pairing of the moon and Mars and Saturn will be very much closer. I suspect with a quarter moon it will also be much more difficult to get exposure time for both objects.

Andy, Probably, only I don't no how to make it available. It was shot in RAW and then to a JPIG(?). But it took me several weeks to learn how to post and size the images.

Really great image, Don! Love the earthshine and how evenly exposed the whole image is. Obviously you're a member of the "wee hours observing group". I'm glad somebody is up to catch these things for me!

Hey Don,

I don't know if you go to these sites, but the Venus/Moon pairing has been the HOT TOPIC of the past couple of days!

From APOD today; http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

And from LPOD yesterday; http://lpod.wikispaces.com/June+25%2C+2014

By the by, if you keep shooting the moon you may want to consider submitting your work to LPOD. It's a relatively cozy but worldwide community of Lunar enthusiasts and you've got a great chance of seeing your stuff published.

Thanks for the comments guys. As for being in the "wee hours observing group" I am retired and one of the perks is that these images were taken at 3:45 am and I can assure you I was sound asleep at 5 am.
