M82 with SN 2014J

Here's an updated version of the M82 image that I posted over in the other thread. I managed to get another two nights of data, so this represents a total of 12 hours exposure (image details.) Click image for higher resolution version.

Love those curling jets! That's a real keepsake with the supernova in it. Do you think there's a coincidental hole right there in the dust lane, or is the SN so bright it's just boring right through it? When I get a chance I'm going to browse some other images to see.

PS - I took a quick look at some other images, and the SN is either in front of the dustlanes or its behind them and the brightness is obscuring some of the detail in that area.

The SN is indeed behind a lot of dust. According to a paper announcing the discovery "the steep attenuation of the spectrum towards blue wavelengths is indicative of unusually large extinction by dust in the line of sight.", and they expect to use the SN to study the inter-stellar media, among other things.

Andy, it seems everything you put on the site that involves an image shows your talent up another level. True you have great equipment, but you also have to know how to use it. Now, when do the classes start?............ Andy?... :lol: :lol:
