It's That Time of Year Again...

Unread post by Apollo XX »

...when the sun nears setting as I'm driving home from work, which means I sometimes see some cool things, like today. As I rode up Rte24N, I glanced over to catch the sun developing a pillar and a pair of sundogs. I rushed over to the Lake Nippenicket parking lot as quickly as I could and took some shots.

Here's a two-panel panorama of the sun phenomena this afternoon. Photos taken with a cheapo Kodak C613 pocket camera on its last legs and stitched in Hugin:

As the sun set the pillar came and went, and this is the last vestige of it:

Further on my way home it dawned on me that it might be an ideal time to catch a young crescent moon, and I was right. I stopped at my local western-sky stomping ground and scanned the advancing twilight for my prey. Success was first found in binos, then easily naked-eye. Here's a grainy shot of a cow with a party hat on jumping over the moon. Photo taken with the same camera stretched to the max, optical and digital zooms cranked all the way, 35mm equivalent of 540mm:

Hope you enjoy,
Mike M.

Mike,

That Cairn Terrier is the stuff of my nightmares every time we visit my brother-in-law's house.
It jumps up at you every time you enter the house, scratching and yipping uncontrollably!!

Your image brought great comfort to me; I'd like to send that dog to the MOON!!!

Beautiful pix, Mike. I don't know why, but I wasn't getting post info from the ASSNE board.
