Delphinus Nova Shows it's Color and latest magnitude UPDATE

Unread post by WCGucfa »

On 10/2/13, Nova Delphinus was visible through a seemingly clear sky, but the
actual seeing was bordering on poor, not allowing high magnification.
Nevertheless, reports of the exploding star taking on a beautiful red hue couldn't
be ignored so I set up my wide field Orion Short Tube and went hunting. It turned
out this would be the clearest night of the week.
The first exposures had to be tweeked for focus, but they showed all the stars in the
field to be whitish colors, except for one, the undoubtedly rosy, out of focus Nova!
I've never been so pleased and excited to see a non-comet blurry blob in an eyepiece field!
The release of Hydrogen Alpha light and dust in the star's vicinity allows shorter, warmer color wavelengths of light to
pass. A visual win,win situation for us!

LATEST MAGNITUDE OF NOVA V339 Del= 10.3 as of Oct.27.

Camera: Canon T3i, 24.68 seconds exposure@ ISO 3200. Scope: Orion Short Tube 80.

Nearly full field shows some familiar friends. From center, the brightest pair of stars in this image, at
the 1 o'clock position, have been important guide posts to the Nova since it became visible.
Moving down through image center to 7 o'clock, another pairing contains our target, Nova Delphini, unmistakable
by its color.

Bill, Amazing! Now I can't wait for the clouds to clear to see if I can see the color change since last I looked at it.

Nice, Bill. Is that a dim sattelite trail I see traipsing through there?

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm facinated with this star!

Mike, yes, that is a quick satellite passing through. Considering the low quality of the
image, I didn't think anyone would notice it.
The Nova was just under 9th mag on this night according to AAVSO. From Mike's recent (and by the way, excellent)
observation, it just could be on the rise again.
