Luna Last Week

Unread post by Apollo XX »

I haven't been able to get out much lately, but I did squeeze in a little lookin' at luna last week with a 90mm refractor I've been playing with. This snapshot doesn't do the view justice, as it's just amazing how much detail can be seen on the moon in even a small scope. It just thrills me to death to explore along the limbs when the terminator is highlighting them, and I find viewing the features of the surface in profile to be a somewhat surreal experience. In this picture I've labeled the craters along the terminator of the NW limb at 89% waxing illumination, and the northernmost one, Byrd, is just four degrees from the true north pole of the moon. One of these days I hope to advance my craft to where I can actually record more detail than the eye can see, but for now here's my low-res capture of the evening's viewing:

Really nice images, Mike!
Labeling the craters is a good way to memorize them, too.
Same with width and depth. I never can remember.

How are your drawing skills? When I was a kid, I would sketch the craters.
One of my fondest memories is chasing the drawings across the cold windy backyard!

This is something Bob M would love to see, Mike. Very impressive with the labeling.

Bill G, you are like a drawing out of the Edmunds Scientific Catalog...from the early 60's. Please take that as a real compliment. Your statement warmed the cockles of my heart.
